Celebrate a Language, Dialect, and Heritage

Authentic Cornish experiences, grounded in Cornish reality

I established my Language School for Cornwall right here in Lostwithiel, back in 2001. As a Cornish woman and a member of the Cornish National Minority, I am proud of the fact that this year, my language school celebrates the 25th anniversary of its existence. This magical anniversary coincides beautifully with the decision that Kernowek, the Cornish language, will now have the highest level of protection possible under European Treaty. It will now be recognised alongside Welsh, Irish Gaelic and Scots Gaelic under Part III of the European Treaty for Regional or Minority Languages.
The work that I do here with the Cornish Language, Dialect and Literature is directly connected to the Council of Europe's Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. It is informed by my lived experience of being Cornish, my knowledge of my Cornish ancestry and by my many years of living and working in Cornish communities here in Cornwall. It is also informed by my academic study of the Cornish language and Cornish identity, which I undertook in connection with my Masters Degree in Contemporary European Culture: Language, Literature and Society (2007, University of Exeter/Institute of Cornish Studies).
My approach to teaching is underpinned by the Post Graduate Certificate in Education that I obtained in Cornwall in 1999, plus twenty five years of subsequent experience as a professional language teacher, teaching a range of languages, and always making sure that aspects of Cornish culture were taught within the relevant wider cultural context. I received my Professional Diploma in Digital Learning Design in 2024. This enables me now to offer a range of fresh, engaging, pre-designed experiences as well as tailor-made courses, which are available both online and in person.
Underpinning all of my work is my love of congruence, of seeing, as a Cornish person, how our language, dialect and literature all fit together with our geology, geography, history, folklore and politics, and, as a Cornish person, passing this on. So welcome to Learn Cornish in Cornwall, where I invite you to experience the beauty, fascination and wonder of Kernowek (the Cornish language), enjoy our rich Cornu-English dialect, and take the opportunity to explore how our great Cornish writers have chosen to work with these linguistic forms, in whatever way suits you best.

The choice is yours! The time is now! I hope to see you soon!

Julie
